Approaches to Writing

reader responsible vs writer responsible

While there are patterns that have been observed in the writing of people from different cultural backgrounds, it is important to remember that these are descriptive patterns rather than predictive. All students you interact with will come to writing with varied background knowledge and experience and so ESL writing teachers need to keep in mind that stereotyping student writing based on their L1 is problematic (Ferris & Hedgcock, 2014).
