Listening Strategy
For this listening practice, we will use one video for a few different activities. You will practice with small parts of the video and then watch the complete video.

Objectives

  1. Listen for organizational patterns
  2. Recognize sentence variety
  3. Understand unfamiliar vocabulary using context

Exercise 1: Organizational Patterns

This TED Talk is organized in two sections. Below is a link to the transcript of this TEDx speech. Scroll through the transcript and try to identify the topic sentences. These are often the first sentences of the paragraphs, but they aren't always.

Look at again at the topic sentences you identified. What do you notice about sentence variety in this TED Talk? Be prepared to share your observations with the class.

Exercise 3: Understanding vocabulary from context

Here is a list of vocabulary words and phrases that you might not be familiar with. When you click on the word, it will take you to the section of the TED Talk where the speaker provides context. Use the context to try to understand the meaning. You can also search for the word on the transcript.
