Communicate a personal acceptance of and acknowledge the dynamics of culture in the lives of all students. 

Assessment: 25 pts.

TA: 30 Minutes

Teachers can adopt the belief statements and apply them to their own classrooms and pedagogy.

Students have registered for and want to attain the ESL endorsement.  They will now explore the belief statements that informed the construction of the TELL endorsement.


  1. The facilitator will introduce the five belief statements.

    1. We value all languages

    2. Language proficiency is essential

    3. All students should learn a second language

    4. Learning language through content is vital

    5. Teachers should model lifelong learning

  2. Divide the class into five groups and assign each group one of the belief statements.

  3. Watch video segment 1.1 of the old videos that introduce the five belief statements.

  4. As the class watches the video have each group pay special attention to their assigned belief statement and be thinking of how their own beliefs are similar to or different.

  5. After the video is over have each group discuss the following.

    1. Do they agree or disagree with the belief statement?

    2. What examples have they seen in their own classrooms or in their own experiences that relate to the statement?

    3. What can they do as teachers to promote the belief?

    4. What implications are there for classroom teachers?

  6. Each group will take 3-5 minutes to share their thoughts with the class.

  7. The facilitator will wrap up the activity by sharing his/her thoughts.
