D is for Design

D is for design.  We have now completed the Analysis phase of ADDIE and we are moving into the Design phase.

In the design phase, we use all the information we collected during the analysis phase to start designing the instruction.

The goal of the design phase is to determine what learning needs to occur and how that learning will occur. It is not about building learning materials, it is about determining which learning materials need to be built.

The first part of the design phase involves going through our task analysis and determining Learning Objectives.

From there, you use your learning objectives to determine how you will assess learning. Anyone familiar with backwards design will find this idea familiar. All assessments must be associated with a learning objective.

Once you have your learning objectives and have designed your assessments, you need to look at delivery strategies. We don’t often get to choose the delivery media (e.g. online or face-to-face) but there are other aspects of delivery that we can specify in our designs.

Finally, when you have all those in place, the last step of the design phase is to create a course outline.
