Teachers Stay Current With the Research
How do teachers stay current with the research that supports improved student learning outcomes, including findings from the learning sciences?
Required
"Teaching can be very isolating at times, and that can be bad for their professional growth. Everyone needs a stimulating environment and connections with others to develop new ideas, strategies and knowledge. We should practice what we preach and model the lifelong learning we encourage in our students."
One way to stay current is to make the library and researching online databases one of your best friends. Research ideas you have questions about. We've created some research help on the resources page of this course.
"Another great way to learn is to connect with other educators at face-to-face conferences, such as the ISTE Conference & Expo (Links to an external site.), or within online communities (Links to an external site.) such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and other similar sites. These are great places to learn at the school, regional, national, or international level about ways to use new technologies to extend and enhance student learning. They are also where educators can share their knowledge with others and contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of their profession." (Source (Links to an external site.))
We shared a number of those communities in Section 2C. Many of them hold annual conferences you can attend. For Utah educators, the Utah Coalition for Educational Technology (Links to an external site.) is a great community and organization for using technology in education. They hold an annual conference in late March or early April. Nathan Smith actively participates in this organization and shares resources with the members through newsletters (Links to an external site.) and blog posts (Links to an external site.).
Take a little time and browse through some of the UCET blog posts and newsletters to get an idea of the resources available to you through them.
When it comes to keeping up on current research, you have many resources available to you. One of the best resources will be your library. Find your Universities Resource Page for Education.
In relation to staying current, here are just a few short videos about integrating technology into education.

To conclude this section, its purpose is to spark some ideas on how you can evaluate and reflect on current research and professional practice on a regular basis to make effective use of existing and emerging digital tools and resources in support of student learning. As you've explored these, and did additional research of your own, please take time to share your thoughts and discoveries with the team in your discussion this week.
