Sara McNeil

Sara McNeil, Ed.D. is an Associate Professor in the Learning, Design, and Technology program area in the College of Education at the University of Houston (Houston, Texas, USA). She specializes in the instructional design of online learning environments, including MOOCs, curriculum development for medical education, and the design, development, and evaluation of educational graphics. Her research interests include online engagement strategies, using drawings to understand mental model development and the role of moderators in asynchronous online discussions. Sara has a diverse background in science, technology, and educational research, as well as art and graphic design. The combination of art and science skills has allowed her to use them to create a wide variety of technology-based products and software. Over the past 30 years, she has collaborated on projects that ranged from safety training for all CSX Railroad employees to Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for over 35,000 learners. She has been the P.I. or Co-PI on six U.S. Department of Education grants, a National Endowment for the Humanities grant, and has received foundation and University of Houston funding. She has participated in or directed the design and development of over ten global open education projects, such as Digital History (http://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu). Her design team won the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Online Learning Network Award in 2017. At the University of Houston, she has received the University Distinguished Leadership in Teaching Award, the University Teaching Excellence Award, and the Distance Education Teaching Excellence Award.
