Estar with the present progressive
The present progressive uses estar to describe events that are in progress.
- Estamos aprendiendo el español ahora. / We are learning Spanish right now.
The word that appears after estar is called a present participle or gerund. In English, we form present participles by adding –ing to verbs.
In Spanish, to form a gerund, remove the –ar from an infinitive and add –ando, or remove the –er or –ir from an infinitive and add –iendo.

Uso del presente progresivo
Note: The present progressive is used to emphasize that an action is in progress. The present indicative can also express action in progress, but it also has other meanings. Compare these examples:
- Comemos en la cafeteria. / We eat in the cafeteria. We do eat in the cafeteria. We are eating in the cafeteria. We are going to eat in the cafeteria (soon).
- Estamos comiendo en la cafetería. / We are eating in the cafeteria (as we speak).
