En los capítulos anteriores vimos ser,estar, tener, haber y hacer. Estos verbos suelen dar problemas al usarlo por su traducción al inglés. Vamos a revisar los usos más problemáticos de estos verbos. |
Usos de ser - características
- Eres muy alto y delgado.
- ocupación, profesión
- Somos abogados.
- Soy estudiante universitario. (Note that while English speakers say, “I am a student.” Spanish speakers drop the indefinite article and say, “Soy estudiante.”)

Adjetivos con SER - grande, pequeño, joven, viejo, alto, bajo, gordo, delgado, moreno, rubio, pelirrojo, largo, corto, rizado, liso, colores, aburrido (boring), divertido, antipático, simpático, cómico, extrovertido, introvertido, pesimista, optimista, serio, romántico, activo, paciente, impaciente, trabajador, perezoso, honesto, mentiroso, egoísta, generoso, apasionado, feliz (characteristically happy person), etc.

Usos de estar - condición
- Estoy enferma.
- La tienda está abierta o cerrada. / The store is open or closed.

- Mis padres están casados o divorciados. / My parents are married or divorced.
- Soy soltero/a. / I am single.

Usos de tener - Tener…años
- Ana tiene seis años.
- Yo tengo muchos años.
- Tenemos veinte años.
- Tener frío / Tener mucho frío (To be cold / to be very cold)
- Remember that we are really saying “to have cold/heat/thirst/hunger,” and cold/heat/thirst/hunger are nouns, so you cannot modify them with the adverb “muy”. You must modify them with the adjective “mucho or mucha”. The same rules apply in the weather expressions below (with hace and hay)
- Tener calor / Tener mucho calor (To be hot / to be very hot)
- Tener sed / Tener mucha sed (To be thirsty / to be very thirsty)
- Tener hambre / Tener mucha hambre (To be hungry / to be very hungry)
- Tener miedo / Tener mucho miedo (To be afraid / to be very afraid)
- Tener prisa / Tener mucha prisa (To be in a hurry / to be very rushed)
- Tener cuidado / Tener mucho cuidado (To be careful / to be very careful)
- Tener éxito / Tener mucho éxito (To be successful / to be very successful)
- Tener razón / Tener mucha razón (To be right / to be very right)
- Note: to be wrong is simply the negation of this: no tener razón, or use the adjective equivocado with estar.
- Tener sueño / Tener mucho sueño (To be sleepy or tired / to be very sleepy or tired)
- Tener suerte / Tener mucha suerte (To be lucky / to be very lucky)
- Tener vergüenza / Tener mucha vergüenza (To be embarrassed / to be very embarrassed)
- Tener ganas de / Tener muchas ganas de (To feel like… / to really feel like [doing something])
- Tengo ganas de ir al cine.
- No tengo ganas de hacer la tarea.

Hacer Hace (This is the only form that can mean “is” and is generally used with weather expressions): - Hace sol / Hace mucho sol / It is sunny. / It is very sunny.
- Hace frío / Hace mucho frío / It is cold. / It is very cold.
- Hace calor / Hace mucho calor / It is hot. / It is very hot.
- Hace buen tiempo / Hace muy buen tiempo / It is nice (good) weather. / It is very nice weather.
- Hace mal tiempo. / Hace muy mal tiempo. / It is bad weather. / It is very bad weather.
- Hace viento. / Hace mucho viento. / It is windy. / It is very windy.
- Hace fresco. / Hace mucho fresco. / It is cool. / It is very cool. [but not cold]

Haber Algunas expresiones del tiempo con Hay: - Hay una tormenta. / There is a storm.
- Hay niebla. / There is fog.
- Hay relámpago y truenos. / There is lightning and thunder.
- Hay un terremoto. / There is an earthquake.
