When talking about time, there are two very different questions:
- ¿Qué hora es? / What time is it (now)?
- Son las diez y diez de la mañana. (10:10 am)
- Es la una y cuarto de la tarde. (1:15 pm)
- ¿A qué hora es la clase de historia? / (At) what time is history class?
- Es a las once de la mañana. (It is at 11:00 am)
- Tengo cálculo a las diez. (I have calculus at ten.)
To tell time in Spanish, use the following format:
Son + las + the hour + y/menos + the minutes (for all hours between 2 and 12).
- Modelo: Son las nueve y cinco. / It is 9:05.
OJO: When talking about the one o’clock hour, use the singular form of ser and the singular form of la.
Es + la + una + y/menos + minutes (for the 1 o’clock hour)
- Modelo: Es la una y cuarto. / It is 1:15.
OJO: Once you get past the half-hour mark, you will express time by subtracting the minutes from the following hour
- Modelo: Son las ocho menos veinte. / It is 7:40. OR It is twenty to eight.
To tell at what time an event/class takes place, use the following format:
Es + a + la/las + the hour + y/menos + the minutes
- Modelo: La clase es a la una y diez. / Class is at 1:10.

Son las siete y cuarto. | It is 7:15. |
Son las siete y media. | It is 7:30. |
Es mediodía. | It is noon (12:00 pm) |
Es medianoche. | It is midnight (12:00 am) |
Son las siete en punto. | It is 7:00 on the dot. |
A la/las | At (time) (the la/las is not translated but must be there to make sense.) |

Desayuno a las nueve de la mañana. | I eat breakfast at nine in the morning. |
Desayuno por la mañana. | I eat breakfast in the morning. |

With a partner, take turns asking each other what time it is.
- Modelo: 9:20 p.m.
- Estudiante 1: ¿Qué hora es?
- Estudiante 2: Son las nueve y veinte de la noche.

- 8:40 p.m.
- 1:11 p.m.
- 1:30 a.m.
- 9:05 a.m.

With a partner, look at Tomás’s schedule below. Take turns asking each other at what time he does different activities. Follow the model.
- Modelo: tiene clase de literatura
- Estudiante 1: ¿A qué hora tiene Tomás la clase de literatura?
- Estudiante 2: Tiene la clase de literatura a las once de la mañana.
