In chapter one you learned about the verb ser. Earlier in this chapter, you learned about the verb estar. As you know, they can both be translated as to be in English. Let’s review the different ways each verb is used.
Ser
To identify yourself and others:
Yo soy Juan y mi hermano es Pedro. / I am Juan and my brother is Pedro.
To indicate profession or occupation:
Pedro es maestro. / Pedro is a teacher.
Ellas son estudiantes. / They are students.
To describe personality traits, physical features, or characteristics of people, animals, or things:
Somos chicos buenos y guapos. / We are good and handsome fellows.
Mi madre es inteligente y bonita. / My mother is intelligent and pretty.
El perro es gordo y el gato es feo. / The dog is fat and the cat is ugly.
To tell time, to give the date, to indicate the season:
Son las tres y media de la tarde. / It is three thirty in the afternoon.
Hoy es martes. / Today is Tuesday.
Es verano. / It is summer.
To indicate origin and nationality:
Mi familia es de Turquía. / My family is from Turkey.
Tú eres costarricense. / You are Costa Rican.
To indicate material of composition:
La camisa es de algodón. / The shirt is (made of) cotton.
To express possession with de:
Este lápiz es de Felipe. / This pencil is Felipe’s.
To give the location and time of an event:
La fiesta es en el gimnasio. / The party is in the gym.
La boda es a las 4:00 pm. / The wedding is at 4:00 pm.
With the preposition para to tell for whom or what something is intended:
Este libro es para Juan. / This book is for Juan.
Estar
To express location of people, places, or things:
Los estudiantes están en la clase. / The students are in the classroom.
Carrollton está en Georgia. / Carrollton is in Georgia.
Los libros están en la biblioteca. / The books are in the library.
To talk about physical conditions:
¿Cómo está Ud.? / How are you?
Yo estoy enferma. / I am sick.
Ella está muerta. / She is dead.
To talk about emotional conditions:
Mis amigos y yo estamos tristes hoy. / My friends and I are sad today.
Yo estoy preparada para el examen. / I am prepared for the exam.
Present tense of estar + present participle of the main verb to form the present progressive
Estamos estudiando para el examen. / We are studying for the exam.
Las chicas están cantando. / The girls are singing.

Con un compañero, describan las personas en la foto usando ser y estar. Pueden inventar información sobre las personas. Por ejemplo, ¿cómo están? ¿dónde están? ¿cómo son físicamente? ¿de dónde son? Etc.

En parejas, describan este dibujo de un cuarto de una residencia estudiantil. Inventa detalles necesarios.
