El presente de tener / the present indicative of tener (to have)

In Spanish, the verb tener means to have and it is used similarly to English to express possession.

To talk about what different people have you need to conjugate the verb tener as follows:

Spanish

English

yo tengo

I have

tienes

you (informal, singular) have

usted tiene

you (formal, singular) have

él / ella tiene

he / she has

nosotros / nosotras tenemos

we have

vosotros / vosotras tenéis

you all (informal, plural) have

ustedes tienen

you all (formal, plural) have

ellos / ellas tienen

they have

To make the verb negative (to say what people do not have) simply add the word no in front of the verb:

Ojo

One common use of tener that is different from English is to talk about someone’s age. Here the structure is “Tener ______ [# of years] años.”

  • For example, to express that “I’m 18 years old,” you would write “Tengo dieciocho años.”

Finally, we can combine the verb tener with que to refer to obligations. This is similar to the structure "have to" in English.

  • Yo tengo que estudiar. / I have to study.
  • Eduardo tiene que hacer la tarea. / Eduardo has to do the homework.
